I agree that if you are the best version of yourself then you can take care of others much better.

Caregiving is one of the most STRESSFUL things to deal with in life. Said from personal experience. You not only have to handle the stress of caring for your loved one but also stress dealing with family members with their own ideas of how things should be handled. On an airplane people with children are advised to put the oxygen mask on first before helping the child. It is not selfish to do what you need to in order to stay strong. I had a parent who had Alzheimer's. That situation did NOT get better. The sooner reality is accepted the better.
