I saw whenever a corporation is in trouble, they will pay millions of dollars for a consultant team to come and access the issue, the final outcome is always the same, layoff, seem to be one answer fits all. In the end, many corporations do that at the local office will end up closing down that office and leaving the market, especially in small countries that are not the major market for them. Employees find themselves disposable, which is true. I find resonate with this part in this article.
To be fair to employers (as I used to be business owner myself), the cost of employees is one of the highest among other costs especially in Singapore labour market. This is usually targeted first unfortunately.
Yes i think getting an external consultant to review this can be counter intuitive and even excessive but employment costs is really high with demands for high salary tat does not commensurate with the work experience and scope of responsibilities. And employers have to think in terms of sacrifices of a few for the larger good to continue to sustain. There are of course owners who only care about their own pockets and profits for themselves but this will bite back if key employees are terminated.
I am thinking we are commenting on different aspects of company cost. I am looking into multinational giant corporations, as that is the only experience I had as an employee. The local office is opened in several countries, like South East Asia (a bunch of countries) and in my case the office I worked in operated well, but at that time they said Indonesian office does not generate profit. They paid for a consultant firm and then decided that they should close SEA all together. That was it. I looked at corporate job differently after that experience. I did my job. The company I worked for generated profit. Yet we are not BIG enough as Indonesian market, hence we are disposable. We are just a number that they can delete fast without thinking of consequences.
However, the part you commented is you as a local employer, with smaller scale and you need to juxtapose many things to keep the company profitable. I can see the burden from your side, but I can't see the burden from the corporation I worked at as I mentioned because we did make the job work, with profit, but NOT enough for the greed of global corporations..
